چکیده

‘In the statistics of today, transformations . . . [aid] in the analysis of data by bending the data nearer the Procrustean bed of the assumptions underlying conventional analyses’ (Tukey, 1957). This letter is in response to Cawley & Janacek (2010), who take exception with our critique of a widely used procedure for estimating bodymass of dinosaurs and other giant animals in extinct lineages (Packard, Boardman & Birchard, 2009). Although the mass of dinosaurs certainly was at issue in our critique, the article actually was a general indictment of the traditional method for estimating parameters in two-parameter allometric equations. Thus, in their challenge to our analysis, Cawley and Janacek essentially mount a defense for the traditional way of doing things (see also their reference to Kerkhoff & Enquist, 2009). This defense is flawed, however, by their failure to balance their excellent analysis of the assumptions (and shortcomings) of nonlinear regression with an equally thorough analysis of the assumptions (and shortcomings) of the traditional approach to allometric research. We focus our response on assumptions underlying the traditional approach because resolving the larger question about statistical modeling of allometric data is key to resolving disagreement concerning estimates for mass of dinosaurs. The allometric equation is widely assumed to take the form of a two-parameter power function

Allometry of visceral organs in living amniotes and its implications for sauropod dinosaurs.

Allometric equations are often used to extrapolate traits in animals for which only body mass estimates are known, such as dinosaurs. One important decision can be whether these equations should be based on mammal, bird or reptile data. To address whether this choice will have a relevant influence on reconstructions, we compared allometric equations for birds and mammals from the literature to ...

Comparison of the predicting body fat equations during a maturation period in adolescent girls (12-16ys)

Validation of predicting fatness methods in the Iranian girls with respect to the maturity process could help to identify anthropometric risk factors. This study evaluate the accuracy of four body composition prediction equations in the teenager students in Hamadan city .Method: The anthropometry profile of 266 adolescent girls (12-16 ys) including ,weight (55.69±10.18 kg),body mass index (2...

Allometric equations for determining volume and biomass of Acer monspessulanum L. subsp. cinerascens multi-stemmed trees

Due to the importance of Acer monspessulanum in Iranian mountain forests, a study was carried out to reliably estimate its woody biomass and growing volume via allometric equations. Four transects, five trees in each were chosen randomly. The characteristics of standing trees including: diameter at root collar, height, number of stems and crown width were measured, then trees were finally cut d...

Longitudinal changes in ultrasonic measurements of body composition during growth in Suffolk ram lambs and evaluation of alternative adjustment strategies for ultrasonic scan data.

Four equations were used to compare alternative procedures to adjust ultrasonic estimates (y) of backfat thickness (BF) and LM area (LMA) for BW using data from a series of 7 scans on 24 Suffolk ram lambs born in 2007. Equations were linear, linear + quadratic, allometric (y = alphaBW(beta)), and allometric + BW (ABW; y = alphaBW(beta)e(gammaW)). Goodness of fit was very similar between equatio...

Regression equations between body and head measurements in the broad-snouted Caiman (Caiman latirostris).

In the present study, regression equations between body and head length measurements for the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) are presented. Age and sex are discussed as sources of variation for allometric models. Four body-length, fourteen head-length, and ten ratio variables were taken from wild and captive animals. With the exception of body mass, log-transformation did not improve ...
